In Language Teaching and Methodologies (LTM) I learned about the conceptions of teaching into three main categories (based on Zahorik, 1986). There are:
1. Science-Research Conceptions
This conception tells us about the result of research that it is improved and we use it in teaching learning process. For example
A. Operational Learning Principles
This is the method in language teaching from developing research on memory, transfer, motivation and others factors. Some applications are
1. Audiolingualism
It is a process of habit formation from hearing the sounds and memorizing the language pattern like learning through dialogues and drill.
2. Task-Based Language Teaching
The learner or students have to do the tasks to improve their knowledge about the language.
3. Learner Training
In this application, we just have to observe the students in daily teaching learning process to make the best strategies of learning.
B. Following a Tested Model of Teaching
In this method, teachers have to follow the models of teaching learning process that have been settled by researchers.
C. Doing what Effective Teachers Do
This method said that if we want to be the best teachers, we have to learn how to become the effective teachers and also practice it in the class.
2. Theory-Philosophy Conceptions
This is the concept of the theory that based on philosophy, beliefs what is viewed as morally right are values-based approaches.
A. Theory-Based Approaches
This theory said that essential of this concept is based on what ought to work. We can use the kind of methods if the theory proves great and have many advantages in teaching learning process.
B. Values-Based Approaches
This method is derived from beliefs what is viewed as morally right. This theory can be used based on values what is the right and what is the wrong methodologies that should be taught in the classroom.
3. Art-Craft Conceptions
This concept includes of creativity of the each teacher and related with teacher’s individual skill and their personality.
Reflection: (My point of View)
Which one the best method for Indonesia?
I think those of the concepts can be good in the class if we combine it well and also the situation and condition support us to do that. There is different need of teaching learning methods in Indonesia, I think. Sometimes we need to use Audiolingualism only in the class, but sometimes we need to combine the Audiolingualism with Task-Based Language Teaching to get the maximal result of the teaching learning process.
We have to be flexible to use the concepts of teaching because no one of those concepts is perfect. Even, we have to search others method that will be successful and accepted in Indonesia.
